Type of Pine Tree

Although some scientists claim there to be 125 different type of pine tree the number are more likely to fall around 115. Due to the fact that there are so many types of pine trees and that all of which grow a little here and there all over the world, a short and concise list of all types of every kind of pine tree is not possible. What will follow are therefore only examples from different continents.

European types of pine trees

Type of pine tree - Turkish pine

Can be found in the Easter Mediterranean areas and, obviously, named after the country Turkey. This type of pine tree grows on relatively low altitudes and is a pine tree of medium height.

Type of pine tree - Scots pine

Found though named after the Scotland in Great Britain, this type of pine tree covers a large part of northern Europe and stretches far into Russia. Growing on many different altitudes, this survivor continuously stun humans with its beauty. While mature, this type of pine trees needles get a nice blue-green colour.

 

Asian types of pine trees

Type of pine tree - Siberian pine

Although similar to the Swiss pine, this pine tree only grows wildly in the northern parts of Siberia. Standing strong against arctic winds and temperatures down to -60F degrees (~-50C degrees) makes it a type of pine tree to reckon with. Therefore it is a common pine found in subarctic parks and outside arrangements.

Type of pine tree - Japanese red pine

A small pine tree only to be found in Japan and is more commonly known for something else than a wild growing tree. This is a very popular type of pine tree to use when making a bonsai-tree.

 

North American types of pine trees

Type of pine tree - Foxtail Pine

This very rare type of pine tree only grows in two small areas in California, USA. Therefore it is on the IUCN Red List. Although believed to live up to 3000 years, the oldest Foxtail pine has been proven to be “only” 2110 years old

Type of pine tree - Lodgepole Pine

A very common type of pine tree that thrives in the north-western parts of the American continent. Although natively bound to Canada and Alaska, the Lodgepole pine has spread to New Zeeland and only time can tell how it will affect the ecosystem.

 

Central American types of pine trees

Type of pine tree - Potosi Pinyon

This pine is found in mountains of Mexico and is more of a shrub than a type of pine tree. Because it grows only on far to reach places in the mountains, this type of pine tree were not detected until 1959.

Type of pine tree - Hispaniolan Pine

While this type of pine tree at first was confined to the island Hispaniola it has now spread and formed large forests in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Hispaniolan pine is capable of growing in very shallow soil due to its symbiotic relationship to a special kind of fungus
